What are the Lib Dems Up to?

Apparently Gordy Broontroosers has decided to try to get legislation through parliament before the General Election to ensure that subsequent elections would not be done on the basis of 'first-past-the-post' but would be done on a particular variant of a proportional representation (PR) - the holy grail of the Lib Dems.

Why?

The only logic I can see is that he has done a deal with the Lib Dems.

Blair, when he thought it was unlikely that he could win an outright majority back in the mid 1990's, did a deal with Lib Dems promising to change the voting system after the General Election. But, in the event, he won a big majority and so reneged on his promises because he no longer needed the LibDems - no surprise there then..

But once-bitten, twice shy. The LibDems are not going to put all their eggs in one basket, and direct their fire at the Conservatives (rather than at both Lab and Conservative) between now and the next General Election, unless they get a clear commitment that cannot be easily broken.

So it follows that Gordy has to demonstrate commitment to the deal by acting in advance.

The Lib Dems are in a powerful position. If they, working in concert with Labour, can hold the Conservatives back to the extent that we get a hung parliament at the next General Election, the rewards will be huge.

This election is not just a fight for the prize of who forms the next Government, it's a fight for our way of life, and our democracy. Perhaps the public need to be informed of this?

Remember, we have a Prime Minister who has no interest in democratic legitimacy - he is an unelected Prime Minister..
